A Big “Thank you” to everyone who attended our Macmillan Coffee Morning.

On Thursday 28th September, we had our Macmillan Coffee Morning at our showroom in Waterlooville. It is a charity that is very close to our hearts, as let’s face it, we all know someone who has been affected by cancer in some way.

Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity which supports people who have been diagnosed with all types of cancer. It could be that you need help with money troubles, advice about work, or just want someone to talk with.

The charity was set up by Douglas Macmillan after his father died from the disease in 1911. It has grown exponentially and is now recognised as one of the 50 largest charities in the UK.

On the Macmillan website, it says that:

“We want to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same. There are 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK today, and as more people live longer with their cancer, this number is set to grow to 4 million by 2030. We want to make sure we can provide support to everyone who needs it, to help people affected by cancer feel more in control of their lives.”

As part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, Cavendish Health Care would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who took part and donated. We had an abundance of delicious cakes, biscuits, chocolate and coffee – as well as generous donations for our book sale and raffle.

The total of money raised was 170.80 which is fantastic. We had customers, staff, family members, turn up to show their support. It was a good day and we all had a brilliant time catching up with everyone.

If you’re looking for any information on cancer, need some support, or simply want to donate some money, then all the information can be found at www.macmillan.org.uk.

Guide to Riser Recliner Chairs from Cavendish Health Care

For many, a Riser Recliner Chair is a pure luxury. However, for those who find sitting down and standing up difficult, a Riser Recliner Chair can be an invaluable addition to the home. Not only will a Riser Recliner Chair help you find that optimum position for relaxation but it will also make sitting and standing up much easier.

With a Riser Recliner Chair, you’ll have the choice to sit, rise, fully recline or simply put your feet up in the comfort of your own home. In this blog, we’re going to help you understand the basics of Riser Recliner Chairs.

How does a Riser Recliner Chair work?

Most of these chairs work on the same principle. Attached to the chair is a remote control which is used to perform its specific functions. It is dependent on a mains outlet and will have either a single or dual motor that will gently and safely adjust the chair to your desired position.

When buying a Riser Recliner Chair, there are many options to choose from including Single Motor, Dual Motor, Tilt-in-space and Wallhuggers to name a few. The type that would suit your lifestyle will be dependent on your needs and the amount of space in your home. A good mobility professional will assess your needs and advise you on the best options.

Would a Riser Recliner Chair benefit me?

If you’re suffering from conditions such as Arthritis, back ache or joint pain then a Riser Recliner Chair can offer you relief by finding a comfortable seating position. It can be very frustrating when you need assistance just to get up from a chair. That’s where a Riser Recliner Chair would come in extremely useful, as the “lift and tilt” function will increase your independence by allowing you to get in and out of the chair with minimal effort.

What positions can I relax in?

It all depends on the type of chair you choose, of course, but as a minimum a good quality Riser Recliner Chair should allow you to:

  • Rise - This function will help you rise from a sitting position to your feet with a press of a button. It helps you get to your feet without putting pressure on your joints, and vice versa, so you can get up safely.
  • Sitting – These chairs are ideal for sitting in for long periods of time. With the correct support and cushioning they are extremely comfortable.
  • Feet up – With your feet up and the back section in the recline position, all the weight and strain is taken away from your feet and legs. This is an excellent position for reading or watching TV.
  • Reclining – The fully recline action will help to alleviate any aches or pains. In this position, you can relax or take that well deserved nap.

Made to Measure VS Standard Chairs

When you walk into a mobility showroom you’ll probably be faced with a choice; “Would you like a ‘made to measure’ or a ‘standard chair?”

The great thing about ‘made to measure’ is that the chair will be made to compliment your exact measurements. However, the downside is that they cost more and may take some time to be delivered.

However, there is another option. Standard chairs are cheaper but are unlikely to fit your measurements perfectly. A mobility professional will observe what your posture is like when sitting in a small, medium and large chair to see which one you’ll be most comfortable in.

As a guide, for optimum comfort, a Riser Recliner Chair should allow

  1. Your feet flat on the floor.
  2. That your legs are at a 90-degree angle
  3. Arm rests should support arms below the elbow.

So, with a standard chair it will be a case of choosing the size closest to your measurements.

Single Motor or Dual Motor?

A single motor will allow you to recline the back rest and the foot rest at the same time. This means that as you recline, the foot rest will automatically rise to support your legs – usually at a 45-degree angle.

A Dual Motor will allow you to operate the back and foot rest independently from each other. This allows you to sit upright but still elevate your legs or fully recline.

What about the Aesthetics of my chair?

Whatever the existing décor of your home, Riser Recliner Chairs come in a whole range of colours, styles and fabrics. You’ll be sure to find something that blends in with your living space so you can sit, tilt, rise and recline while watching your favourite TV show in complete comfort.

At our Cavendish Health Care showroom, we stock Riser Recliner Chairs from trusted manufacturers such as Prima Care, Cosi Chair, Doge and One Rehab. We also recommend that you try any chair before you buy it. Please call us on 02392 255600 for more information.

7 top Reading Aids from Cavendish Health Care

Reading is one of life’s pleasures. You can get lost in a good book whether you’re at home or abroad, in the height of summer or the depths of winter. However, it can be difficult for those with a disability to enjoy reading. A task which most will take for granted.

It’s not until you lose the ability to read that you realise how much we depend upon it. There are many ways in which your reading ability can be affected. It could be that your eyesight has started to deteriorate or that you’ve developed rheumatism or arthritis meaning it’s harder to hold a book for long periods of time. In this blog, we’re going to look at some of the reading aids on the market and how they can help you enjoy reading again.

The Bookchair

This really is a nice-looking product. The Bookchair helps to alleviate neck and back problems by positioning the text at the correct level. On the bottom, there are little wooden pegs which will hold the pages in place. You’ll be able to put this wherever is comfortable; on a coffee table or a bedside cabinet and it’ll come in extremely useful if you’re confined to a bed. It will also be invaluable for people suffering from pains or weakness in the hands or wrists as it means the weight of the book is taken by the bookchair.

It has a stylish wood finish with a cotton cloth to support the book and can be adjusted to 3 different levels. The rubber feet on the bottom ensure that your surfaces won’t be scratched or marked. The book chair takes the hassle of holding a weighty book for long periods of time; in fact, I can imagine this sitting on my kitchen side cradling a cookery book.

LED Clip Light

There are many types of LED clip light on the market. These are great if you need that extra little bit of light so that you don’t strain your eyes.

They can be clipped to the book you’re reading or your headboard. It can then be bent to face any direction you wish.

Once the LED clip light is turned on, the light remains concentrated across a small area which makes it perfect for bedtime reading without disturbing your partner.

The Vivi Touch Magnifier

Magnifiers are great if the text you’re reading is just out of reach. Again, there is a wide variety of them on the market. The Vivi Touch Magnifier is slim and has a bright LED light which is activated by your touch. With a compact design, it’ll fit comfortably in your pocket, purse or bag and is ideal for reading the print on medicine bottles, restaurant menus, nutritional details on food packaging and of course, books, magazines and newspapers.

Sheet Magnifier

Another cheap and practical solution for enlarging text is a sheet magnifier. This is larger than the Vivi Touch but doesn’t have a light. The sheet magnifier will cover and magnify (2x) a whole page of text so that you won’t have to worry about moving your hand as you progress along the page.

It provides a viewing area of 250mm x 180mm, so would be useful for books, magazines, newspapers and maps..

Standing Page Magnifier

If you’re looking for something that will aid your reading but don’t particularly want to hold it or hover your arm over the page, then there are many free-standing options. The standing page magnifier from Drive Medical has a polished wood frame, and with the aid of two legs, will stand upright over the page you’re reading.

It has been designed to be the perfect distance for reading, writing, puzzles and any other activity that requires close attention. On this product, the magnifier will enlarge the text 3 x and can be folded for easy transportation.

Handsfree Craft Magnifier

Another option is the Handsfree Craft Magnifier. This sits comfortably around your neck, rests on your chest and provides you with 2.5 X magnification. The adjustable neck cord will make sure that you can obtain a comfortable reading height. The great thing about this is that it will leave your hands-free to turn pages or to fill out that crossword or puzzle.

Audiobooks

Audiobooks are a great way to listen to a book without having to lift a finger. You have the option to listen through a pair of headphones or speakers.

In many cases, the book is narrated by the author which can be a lot of fun and help you connect more with the story. It would also be perfect for anyone who struggles to read print when magnified or is registered as blind.

Audiobooks can be listened to digitally (there are lots of sites on the internet) or borrowed from your local library in CD format.

At Cavendish Health Care, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to read in complete comfort. That’s why we offer a full range of reading aids from magnifiers, book rests and lighting solutions. The New Di Blasi Car Hoist

The NEW Di Blasi Car Hoist has arrived in the UK. For many years, the Di Blasi family has been designing and manufacturing folding mopeds, folding tricycles, folding bicycles and folding mobility scooters.

The company was founded by Mr Rosario Di Blasi. He was a pilot in the Italian Air Force and was always interested in innovative mechanics. He soon realised the demand for space saving vehicles after living in an 8th floor apartment in Rome. The elevator was too small to hold his bicycle so Rosario was forced to carry it up the stairs after a hard day’s work.

One thing that makes the Di Blasi Car Hoist stand out from the crowd is that it has no permanent fixings so you’ll be able to move it from car to car. This is extremely helpful if you have more than one car in the household because it won’t limit which car you take on your journey.

Now, moving on to the technical side of the hoist.
The strong and powerful frame is held in place by 14 rubber bumpers positioned to the front, rear sides, top and bottom. These bumpers can be adjusted so that they’ll lock and secure the hoist to a wide range of different boot spaces. Due to the simplistic design, the hoist can be altered and moved without the help of an engineer or technician.
The beauty of the Di Blasi Car Hoist is that it leaves enough space behind the frame and to the sides for you to store your shopping. Of course, it really does depend on the size of your car boot as to how much storage space you’ll be left with.

The straightforward design of the Di Blasi Car Hoist means that it is easy to install and can be removed when it’s not being used. It will certainly have a positive impact on your life by taking the stress and strain from your day, leaving you to focus on the things that really matter - like what adventure you’re going to go on next!

If you’re muttering to yourself, “but how do I power this thing?” the good news is that you have a couple of options. The car hoist will run off your scooter battery or if that’s running low, it can be connected to your car battery with the help of a little converter.

If you want to see the Di Blasi Car Hoist in action, then pop into our Waterlooville or Torquay showroom. Alternatively, please give us a call on
02392 255600 where a friendly member of our team will be more than happy to provide any information you might need.

Come and Try our High Quality and Stylish The Able Label Range of Clothing

Looking for something new to wear this summer? At our mobility showroom in Waterlooville, we now have a stylish and colourful range of The Able Label clothing.

"Clothes I hear you say? What have they got to do with mobility solutions?"

In fact, The Able Label range of women’s clothing is specifically designed to help make dressing much much easier for those with a wide range of physical and cognitive needs. They really are a clever design; at first glance, you wouldn’t even know that they’re adapted. All the Velcro and easy fastenings have been expertly hidden.

The company was founded when Katie Ellis realised her grandmother – diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease – was having difficulty when dressing. So, to make life easier Katie decided to design and develop a clothing range which would be aesthetically pleasing and practical. And now it’s in our Waterlooville showroom ready for you to wear – what an inspirational story!

On the website, it says that "The Able Label provides quality, stylish clothes with adapted designs and hidden extras that make self-dressing easier for those with dressing difficulties."

The range includes wrap-around skirts and dresses, Velcro-fastened shirts and pull on trousers. The clothing range has been designed in such a way that you won’t need to worry about overhead dressing or struggling with fiddly buttons.

It is also extremely convenient for assisted dressing. The wrap around dresses open completely. This means that there’ll be no more standing on one leg while stepping into the dress. This design makes things quicker and easier for all involved.

Another excellent feature is that the clothes have colour coordinated stitching inside which is very useful if you suffer from cognitive difficulties. The stitching on the inside of the garment is coloured either lime for the left and red for the right – this saves time and confusion when dressing.

In the past, we’ve had lots of positive feedback regarding The Able Label Range. And for the summer we’ve even dressed Mabel the Able Label Mannequin so she doesn’t get too warm! Look how lovely and fresh she looks in her stripy black and white dress and red jacket.

To try or browse our collection of The Able Label Clothing, simply pop into our store or call us on 02392 255600 for more information.
